of claimants I was compelled to look at the papers of each one of this crowd & to make the matter worse Capt Kendrick was absent from the city. I having sent him in the county to investigate outrages alledged to have been committed upon freedmen at or near Shelby Station.  My report is not as full as I would like it, but the reports from the county are not yet all in & I had to complete it this evening believing that I will have another rush tomorrow.  The conservatives feeling greatly disappointed and very low over the result of the elections and taking advantage of the present dull times & discharging a great number of radical colored men & refusing to hire persons of that stripe.  I am of the opinion that it will be pretty generally done.  So far nearly every one who has indulged in this innocent amusement has paid the person off before discharging them.  Those who have forgotten or neglected to go through that part of the performance I have caused to be sued. We have
