"Gen'l" Brazzleton being the largest land owner who refused to sell a lot at any price; but stated that if the colored people could procure a lot out of town he would give $20.00 toward paying for the same. A Mr. Moffit a rebel has been corresponding with two gentlemen who reside in some other portion of the state with a view to securing a lot about a mile from the village and should they fail in this it will probably be a long time before they will succeed in getting a house built at New Market. I assured them that the appropriation would be held till the 1st of Sept. and would then be expended for their benefit, if in the mean time they could procure a lot.

Rodgerville.- I spent two days at this place to give them the colored people opportunity to secure a lot which will cost them $200.00 cash down; they only succeeded in raising $47.00 which was 3/4 less than the amount required; they wished me to use my influence in withholding the appropriation for their benefit and give them a little more time, which I promised to do. They alleging that many who had agreed to assist them was then absent and could not be seen. I am of the opinion that they will not be able to do anything for themselves before next year. The amount appropriated would only be sufficient to pay the mechanic for his labor, to say nothing about the cost of the material.
