When I learned that they had determined not to accept the proffered assistance, I was anxious to know the cause, as they had asked for the appropriation. I was told by Esqr. McDermon the Chancery Court Clerk of this county that he as one of the Directors objected on these grounds: viz- That they wished to control the church and school themselves, that if the appropriation by the Bureau was accepted that the Bureau might want to control it and would furnish a yankee teacher, who would teach incendiary doctrines to the colored people, "and that they did not want their nigger subject to any such influences," and for that reason they prefered to supply their own teachers. They inform me that they will make an effort to have the Church finished this fall.

In view of the facts as set forth I would recommend that the appropriation be withheld for the present at least.
