from Chattanooga are hundred and fifty (150) from Knoxville seventy five (75) from Cleveland and seventy five (75) from Jonesboro. Outside of the vicinity of these points the cases of destitution will be found to be so few and isolated that they can be reached much more readily and economically by the Municipal Authorities of each County than they could be by the Governm't.

As provisions can be purchased in each County, I do not believe the Authorities will permit any one to Starve.

Had it not been that large amounts of Corn and bacon have been purchased through this part of the State for Shipment to Atlanta Ga. and other points there would have been enough to amply supply the wants of all. Even now, I am satisfied there will be sufficient, but the prices are much higher than they would otherwise have been. The classes of persons, however, embraced in this report are mostly Widows and Orphans - both White and Black. - of deceased Soldiers, who from various causes are unable to buy at any price.

Can corn be purchased at this place, at from ninety cts. to one dollar per bushell, and bacon at from 12 to 14 cts per pound.
