Personal style--the sine qua non of expressive maturity--reflects experience, gives shape to inspiration and affirms technique. It is the mark of authority which distinguishes an artist's work, asserting presence and commanding attention. With this showing of recent painting by Arthur Secunda, a vital talent emerges on the Southern California scene. By no means new to painting, he has now arrived at a new form in his art which brings him to forward ranks. The kernel of his style appeared in Santa Barbara barely a year ago; since then he has lived in Los Angeles, where the ripening process has been stimulated to rich fruition.

Always drawn to expressionism, Secunda has moved from figurative pictorial elements to non-objective, "pure" expressionist painting. Disciplined yet direct and free, the act is joined with the material and the idea; unique, organic style is the result. This is painters' painting, challenging and rewarding.
