Lafayette Depot in Fayette County,

Capt. Kendrick having visited the place and thoroughly investigated the case reports. "That David Brooks is guilty of the shooting of George Washington, a freedman in the employ of Mr. Edward Taylor of Fayette Co. Tenn. But can assign no reason for his so doing."

Capt. Kendrick in his report of this case also states: "I would further add that from the state of feeling through that section of country, "I consider it totally unsafe for an officer or soldier of the U.S. service to travel through there without a further escort."
It was in this neighborhood that a man by the name of Thomas J. Johnson in the month of July last murdered a freedman in his employ by the name of Dolly Good. I have used every effort to have the party arrested, but up to this time have met with no success. I secured a warrant for his arrest but the Crustable into whose hands it was placed returned the writ to the Magistrate, refusing to serve it.

It is a complete farce to endeavor to obtain justice for the freedmen
