the blacks, so much so that the Cold [[colored]] people noticed it themselves - this seems to encourage them greatly.  The jury's seemed to take pride in being lenient to the negroes and boasted of it when they were out of court, this I think speaks volumes in favor of the county.

In Giles county matters are not in as good condition as in Williamson.  Crops have not been good, consequently the people are discouraged and the whites are more disposed to take advantage of the blacks.

Many of the small farmers who have rented their land and who have no property  which could be touched by law are endeavoring to sell all their product and to get the money in their hands.  They then tell the negroes to whistle for their pay.

We have a sheriff here who is a great injury to this county.  He is low, bigoted and mean.  He does all he can against the negroes, he boasts to every one  that he whipes his negroes when they displease him and that he intends to do it.  He prompts the low and mean to abuse the negros and do all they can against them.
