he had me with several negroes in there trying to settle accounts between one Fran McNaily and said negroes. Said McNaily was doing his utmost to cheat the negroes out of all that was
due them.

If there is any way in which this Sheriff can be removed it ought to be done, most of the substantial Farmers of this county are disposed to do right. I do not think the negroes will suffer during the coming winter.

Capt Judd further reports the following outrage.  On the 7th of November 1866. Square Rivens' (Cold) was shot by Robert Rhodes.  Circumstances were as follows.
Square Rivens and Robert Rivens (Cold) were working in Rhodes field; they set fire to the grass, Rhodes rode into the field cursing and swearing. He got off his horse. The boy (Square) was frightened and ran, Rhodes called to him to stop saying he would shoot him, the boy ran on and Rhodes shot him. The boy (Square) put his hand up to his side and continued run. He was not seen until two days after when he was found dead in the field, the ball having passed through his side. Samuel Riven's saw the shot fired and saw Square put his hand to
