backward about making contracts for the present year from the fact that they all wish to farm for a portion of the crop. I find that those that farmed for a portion of the crop the past year have made more clear money than those that worked for wages although crops were short in this county.

Wm. W. Rogers Supt Sumner and Macon Cos. reports, I find the people disposed to hire the colored people and receive their labor and when their wages are due they, the colored are driven off under false pretenses and not allowed any thing, which has brought them to destitution.

I have had a large number of these cases before the courts, have succeeded in some of them, and others have been decided against the colored on account of color, the prejudice here is unreasonably high.

Quite a number of the colored are afraid to come to me for assistance fearing they will be robbed or murdered.
