John Lawrence. Supt. Davidson Co. reports Jan 31st 67. The general condition of the freedmen in this county is as good as could be expected- The great body of them are engaged in remunerative labor, or in trade, and are making commendable progress in all the acts of the better life upon which they have so recently entered.

I have carefully noticed the reports of the police court as well as the conduct of the freedmen on the streets, and it is perfectly evident that they are less addicted to intemperance than the white people of the city.

The zeal which they manifest on the subject of education is worthy of the highest commendation. They seem willing to make any sacrifice in order that their children may have the advantage of a common school education.

Commendable efforts are being made also by a large class of the adult population to acquire such knowledge as will qualify them to discharge in an intelligent manner the high duties of American Citizens.
