Revd. Richd. Simpson, Supt. White Co. reports. During the time of our last Circuit Court, I attended two trials of Assault and  battery, committed on Col'd persons by whites.

I. Case of T. E. Pope, Chairman of our County Court whipped a col'd woman. (Phoebe Snodgrass) As chairman of the court he had the appointing of the jurors and his nephew was one of the jurors, who sat on his case and jurors of his own choosing, of course he was acquitted.

II. J. Vincent whipped Adaline Paul (col'd) When she went before the Grand Jury to give evidence in the case, he (Vincent) procured his own warrant and arrest, under the small offense law, before Justice of the Peace J. O. Bradley and was fined two Dollars. On his trial before the Circuit Court, he, Vincent plead former trial before the justice, and was acquitted . Thus you can see the prejudice against the colored population here.
