On the night of the 15th ult some young white men went to the houses of Ann Whittaker and Julia Oates, (Col'd) citizens of this place and tore down the chimneys of their houses and afterwards threw stones at the houses. The next morning the Supt on visiting them, found their floors, and beds covered with Snow and their houses rendered unfit for occupancy. After investigation he could find no cause for such treatment. They (the Freedmen) expressed themselves as being aware of the fact as to who the guilty parties were, and upon the affidavit of one of them being sworn to a warrant was issued and the accused arrested, proof as to identity was sworn to but witness was impeached yet corroborating testimony was given sufficient to legalize proof of identity, circumstantial evidence of the strongest kind was adduced, yet the magistrate saw proper to dismiss the case without find or punishment.
