cases juries have found them guilty on evidence which must have derived its whole weight from their prejudices. I have done all in my power to correct this evil, but one satisfied that its cure can only result from the election of officers and the selection of juries which will try all men alike; and, I trust that a better day is near at hand

The investment of the freedmen with the elective franchise has inspired them with new hopes and will. I have no doubt contribute materially to the development of a manly character; and a very general disposition is manifested to acquire such knowledge as will enable them to exercise this high duty in a becoming manner.

The weekly lectures during the month have been attended, no matter how inclement the weather by as many persons as our largest houses would contain. 

One of the flourishing literary and debating societies have been organized and is in a flourishing
