is no suffering in this County from the want of rations or clothing and no vagrancy on the part of the black, all seem to be at work at something. They report that they are better treated this year than last.

The Agent has approved during the past month 18 contracts, embracing 47 laborers. No outrages have been reported as having been committed by the whites upon the blacks.

There is a school at Jackson for the colored people. It was opened under the auspices of the M. E. Church on the 18th day of March. It is being conducted under the supervision of the Rev. L. Lea Pastor of the M. E. Church (white) at that place. The school is held in the colored M. E. Church building which is owned by the freedmen and built by leading whites subscribed liberally towards it. The building is eighty feet by thirty six and capable of seating 800 persons.
