There is one small colored school in operation at Brownsville. 30 scholars are in attendance. A Miss Truman is teacher. She holds the school in her house and I should judge was not accomplishing a great deal of good.

The colored people are moving in the subject of education. They have secured a subscription of $1200 of which about $800 has been already paid in.

Upon this subscription list are the names of of thirty-two of the white citizens of Brownsville who have subscribed from $5.00 to $50.00 each. Capt Kendrick addressed a meeting of the colored people held for that purpose at the Methodist Church. He also assisted them in selecting a lot upon which to build the same.

It is the intention to open the school about the middle of May if the building is completed by that time.  The indications are that they can have over a hundred scholars to commence with.
