at the same time they (Rebs) tell them if they support the radicals, they will turn them off their plantations.  Every effort is made to intimidate the negroes and make them believe they will be driven from the county unless they vote and act as the Rebels tell them and yet the Reb tell the negro that he (Reb) is the only man worthy of confidence.

The boy Seaborn James (white) who killed Lewis Hughes (colored) on the 23rd of March 1867, was tried before a Jury of this county of Giles, and was acquitted although there was plain proof that Lewis was killed while running away from the boy. No justification was shown, but the jury followed the justification. This is a fair couple of the justice to be obtained for the Negro in this County. Four of the best lawyers of this county volunteered their resources to defend the murderer.  The colored people are all minding their business and are doing their best. I save some money and established a good name and they will, if the whites do them half justice.
