were made by some of the citizens of that section to break up the latter school, but I have succeeded in frightning such a determination out of them and from last reports the school is progressing finely and no fears are entertained of its being broken up or molested in any way. The City and County authorities continue to provide for all such poor as come within the law. The others are supported from the rations shown on the provisions returns forwarded me on the 17" day of April. I have issued during the month of April rations in this city to the following destitute freed people: 10 adults & 13 children. Total 23. In addition to this I have issued rations & clothing to the Memphis Colored Orphan Asylum as usual a report of which I forwarded on the 1st of this month. 

During the month 5 contracts embracing the names of 7 laborers were approved at this office. 

The work in the office during the past month has largely increased over any previous month since I assumed charge.
