I have the honor to report no outrages, committed upon the Freedmen of this Co during the month except the case of Ransom Chatman (cold) concerning whose wounding and death a special report was sent you on the 25th inst. Said Chatman was a desperate character having escaped from Jail at Lebanon Tenn where he had been confined a charge of raping a cold woman of Wilson Co. He had remained at large for about five months defeating every effort made for his arrest until the 22d. inst. when Detective Tunston of this city came upon him and on endeavoring to execute a warrant held by him was knocked down by said Chatman who then and there escaped to the country. A short distance out he was overtaken by said detective and called upon to surrender, but responded by throwing stones, and other acts of
