violent resistance, when said detective fired upon and twice wounded him.

The prisoner Chatman was then conveyed to the County jail where on the morning of the 23d inst he died from the effects of his wounds.

As the officer acted clearly within line of his duty. no action has been taken in the matter by the Civil authorities.

Owing to the deep political excitement which now prevails throughout the entire community frequent disturbances have been threatened, yet prevented by timely counsel and advice. No race have a higher regard for law and order than the freedmen and I am convinced if trouble arise it will be through no want of endurance and long suffering on their part.

I hardly think there is room to mend the habits of the freedmen of this Co. as regards the vice of intemperance The police and other court records show an almost total lack of punishments for intoxication on their part. I have however since the receipt of Genl Howards circular
