School. This appears not to have met with the approbation
of some persons whose names are unknown - so they visited the place on the 22d ult, and destroyed the building, leaving a notice that if Mr. Alred continued to preach and teach the freedmen, he had better have his grave already dug. Mr. Hurst, in obedience to my instructions, visited the locality, but was unable to obtain the names of the guilty parties.

During the month of June 3930 rations were issued to 210 destitute Refugees and Freedmen as follows: No. of whites 105, No. of blacks 100. 

In Shelby County the freedpeople as a general thing are making rapid advances. Some complaints are, however, that it is more difficult for them to find employment now than is was six months ago, - and many are of the opinion that this employment is refused them on account of their political opinions. While this is technically true in many cases, yet there is also another cause, that of exceedingly dull times in business circles. - There is but little trade being carried on in Memphis and money is very scarce.
