trouble at that Furnace this year. Outrages. there have been but two or three of them, in the way of assaults since my last report, that have come to the knowledge of this office.

One Bud Gray a man of doubtful character shot a col'd man by the name of Merdith Townsend late of Co. "D" 101st U.S.C.I. The wound was not a dangerous one, but will disable Meridith for several weeks. five buck shot were cut out of his back and neck. The friends of Gray had compromised the damages with the freedman before it came to my knowledge, by paying him $25 cash and a poor note of $25. it is now in the hands of the Civil Authorities.

There is no change in the Educational Department since my last report. The health of the freedmen in this Sub District, notwithstanding some reports to the contrary is good.
