The election of the 1st inst. contrary to general expectation passed off quietly and being the first exercise of the elective franchise by our colored fellow citizens, was in every respect praiseworthy

Immediately after the election a movement was set on fast by a certain class to discharge from their employment all colored persons who had voted the Republican ticket, altogether 169 persons have reported to this office and at one time it was feared that great suffering to say nothing of popular violence would be the result. The Bureau together with some of our leading citizens taking prompt measures to correct the proscription. It lasted but a few days, and has now altogether ceased. The demand for labor is again greater than the supply, and that at advanced wages.

On the 20th of August we ceased the issuing of rations to destitute persons, and since have had but few applications for the same. Labor is plenty, wages good, and provisions cheap, and I think the above class will have little or no trouble in getting along without further assistance from the Government.
