say this Ruklux Klan was gotten up by the young men merely for fun and that they never intend to interfere with anyone. This may all be true but I doubt it. It is certainly a very extensive institution for a funny one. The rebs are anxious to have all pistols and other fire arms taken from the negroes - There have been several cases where arms have been taken from them without any form of law. I try to prevent this as much as possible. If the whites do attempt to take the negroes arms from them, there will be a fight. This is what I fear more than anything else. The negroes will fight and fight hard too if they are crowded to it.

Since my last regular report the general election for State officers came and has passed off. In the election those of the freedmen who did vote displayed an independence of character scarcely to have been expected in consideration of the circumstances by which they were surrounded. Notwithstanding the many threats constantly hurled upon and pelted
