at them for weeks previous, they voted Radical with an unanimity, which while it confounded their opponents surprised their friends. Some of these have since been turned from employment while others are proscribed and refused employment for the same cause. The number however is not great and they have readily found employment elsewhere.

In remote localities where there are but few col'd people general proscription has prevailed, their mental and moral culture strongly opposed. As an example of this I will be permitted to state that a gentleman of an exceptional character, fine education and moral worth proposed to open and conduct a Sabbath school for the instruction and benefit of col'd children, but met with much opposition from the white people. The opposition went so far that the Civil law was appealed to.- two citizens making application to the County Court for an order suppressing the school as a nuisance. The court however refused to grant the order and advised that the school be allowed to go on for the religious instruction and moral culture of the colored children.
