of politicians on both sides the peace has been pretty generally preserved still a good deal of bad feeling has been around which will yet take many months to abate.  The political parties in Tennessee are more bitter towards each other perhaps than in other state of the Union and as the col'd people constitute the rank and file of the party in Middle Tennessee, it is quite natural that they should be made the object of a great deal of bitter feeling and abuse. 

I have endeavored (whenever brought in contact) by the use of all practical means and by every word of conciliation to maintain that good feeling between the white and colored people which is indispenseble to the happiness and prosperity of both.
