in putting them back unmolested either by letter or having both parties call at this office. In the case of S. S. Dare, I had a Peace Warrant issued and he was placed under bonds of $2500, besides judgement being awarded to the freedmen as follows: Young Honston $200.00 Paul Bolin $160.00 Tom - $120.00 Poney Reeves $50.00. Four cases of outrages upon freedmen were reported to this Office since Aug 1st. W. H. Young teaching school at Shelby Depot, had his school broken up and he himself obliged to leave the place on account of voting the Radical ticket. A warrant was issued for the arrest of the guilty parties and placed into the hands of Supt. Beaumont of the Metropolitan Police, who sent a posse to the place, but the parties had fled. Young re-opened his school on the 12th of Aug. under favorable auspices and reports 80 scholars. Aug. 22d Jessie Thomas (col'd) was killed in this City by Sam Holcomb (col'd). Holcomb was arrested, had an examination and remanded to jail to await the action of the Grand Jury. August 7th Charles Harris (col'd) shot at and beaten by Thomas Shelby, Wm Sloan, Jeff McClellan, John Dollison and Robt McClellan near Cuba Tenn. Warrant issued and placed in the hands of Supt. Beaumont of the M. P. - parties arrested and brought to this City and case tried
