before Esquire Black. Jeff McClellan and Robt McClellan & John Dollison were discharged, there being no proof as to their being implicated. Thos Shelby and Wm Sloan each fined $5.00 & costs for assault & battery, there being no proof of a shooting. Aug. 19" Robt Humphrey committed assault & battery upon Mathew Jourdan (col'd) at or near Cuba. A warrant was issued for the arrest of Humphrey and is now on file in this office - Jourdan never having returned after reporting the case.

The health of the City is considerably better: there has been but little sickness during the month and but an occasional case of cholera. The number of freedpeople treated at the County Hospitals during the month are 96. Of this number 65 were male & 31 female. No. of colored patients received in the State Hospital during the month, 34; No. remaining on since last report 20; No. of death 9. - During the middle of the month many applications were made at this Office by sick freedpeople for admission into the Hospital. These people I find came from all parts of Miss. and Arkansas. I succeeded in getting them admitted, but was obliged to report these cases to Supt. Beaumont of the Police, who has succeeded in putting a stop to the Captains of boats landing these people. The Hospital became so full that the Surgeon in charge
