the case with me if I would permit him to return to his family and never prosecute him again for the same offence in this or any other Court by the payment of Five hundred Dollars ($500.00) to the Widow of the late Jo Miller, which in consideration of his circumstances I felt bound to accept. The widow was highly gratified with this arrangement and though feeling the loss of her husband think she has now enough to keep her from want and starvation.

I have disbursed Bounty Claims to the am't of $4,479.00/100. during the last month and have advised the late soldiers to invest their money in Real Estate.

We are experiencing some difficulty just now from the fact that the Crops are made and the employes on the plantations can be dispensed with. Consequently many of the Freedmen who voted for Govr. Brownlow are being discharged with the remark "that no Brownlow nigger can work on their land. However these instances are few and I have succeeded in compromising most of them satisfactorily to both parties.

On the whole the discharging of so many colored men since the election has done much good to the freedmen. They now begin to appreciate a home. Consequently nearly all those who are receiving money
