State of feeling on the part of Citizens toward the Freedmen and the Bureau Also Views and Suggestions of the Sub-Asst. Commissioner 

The only exhibition of bad feelings on the part of Citizens toward the Freedmen reported in this Sub-District during the month, occurred in Hawkins County; where, it seems that several of the large property holders are determined to carry out threats, made prior to the late election, that they would drive from their premises all who voted against their wishes, as soon as their present contracts expired. One of these men, named William Casmac, has already driven from his premises a woman named Casmac, - a former Slave - and widow of a deceased Federal Soldier, with seven children, who are now dependent on Charity, for Shelter, and subsistence.
