It becomes my duty to report a shocking murder of a colored man named W. Nelson who was shot while standing at his own door on Saturday night 27th Oct./67 by a pistol in the hands of a white man and neighbor by the name of Cicero Layhew. living on the farm of Mrs Patterson in Rutherford County some six (6) miles from Murfreesboro on the Liberty Pike - The man Nelson lived with James Brown near the same place. I have procured a warrant for Layhews arrest and placed it in the hands of a Constable who twice went into his neighborhood and twice failed to find him. he expects to make a third attempt tomorrow.

My resignation having been accepted to take effect this day (1st Inst) I have in compliance with orders of the Asst Comt. closed this office and boxed up all the books, Papers & pertaining to it and will ship them tomorrow.

J. C. McMullin agent at Clarksville Tenn. reports as follows

A effort has been made during the last few weeks by myself and others to get up a better interest in common schools of this county among the Whites and Blacks, particularly among the latter. There are two settlements in this Co. of freedmen that particularly need assistance.
