from the Gov't in erecting School Houses. These are called the "Round Pond" and "Cabin Rove". Of the former there are 75 children between the ages of 4 and 21 years. At the latter 55 between those ages. Three responsible colored men have bound themselves to me that if the Gov't will assist them in completing a school house at each of these places they will support a good school at least one half of the year.

The Bureau about one year or less ago made an appropriation for a school house at the "Round Pond" but through some misunderstanding was misappropriated. I would earnestly suggest that some assistance from the Gov't be rendered these people for they are making laudable efforts toward educating themselves and their children - holding school a portion of last summer in an old barn. I would call attention to the school taught by the Rev. M Duncan at Cumberland furnace. Mr. D has about 80 pupils in constant attendance these being on the primary branches - it is impossible for him to take charge of so many. Therefore, he has called to his assistance his daughter & though they keep a good school & work hard, the Cold people in that vicinity are wholly unable to furnish a common support to Mr. D. and family.  The freedmen sending their children are unable to pay
