Mr. D receiving only $16 per month out of which they have to support their families. I would earnestly recommend some assistance to Mr. Duncan from the Bureau.

For some reason the enemies of the freedmen in my district have manifested more of their hostility during the last month than any previous one since the Bureau has been in my charge.

There have been four (4) cases of assault & battery within the last four weeks all of them of an aggravated character to wit. Dr. William Shelby made an assault upon an Crea Perkins cold., with a large rock cutting a large gash in his head & injuring him severely. I at once commenced an action of law against Shelby but had some difficulty in getting an officer to serve the papers. Shelby being an influential man. I have also commenced suit against him for private damages.

James Leavatt and Monroe Whittock were also brutally assaulted, the former on the 30th day of Oct. by one Thomas Fester, the latter on the 26th of Oct by one John Bird his employer. Warrants have been issued for their arrest.

A Colored man by the name of Richard Johnson was murdered on the 25th of Oct. last near Daveys Mill in this county. This man was the very best of his race, was in the employ of C H. Henderson Chrestiana Co Ky. We have
