of the month a large share of this gain was owing to the recent change of the location of the Bank and its being fitted up in a respectable style. The colored people are having more confidence in the institution and the deposits will undoubtedly increase for months to come.

On the 26th day of Oct. five white men Burt Edwards, Joe Wesson, Tom Floor, John Woods and Ian Holloway all living near Bartletts Station in this County went to the house of a freedman, Mose Bass by name, in the night and took him out and hung by the neck to a tree.  They accusing him of having stolen a shot-gun. The freedman claims that he did not take it, but by promising to return it to them the next day he saved his life and was cut down. I have caused a warrant to be issued for their arrest and placed it in the hands of the Sheriff who has promised to have the parties arrested. 
On or about the 4th day of October 1867, two white men Wesley and Jerry Dougherty, live about 7 miles from Shelly Station in this County assaulted and cruelly beat Peter Shelton and his two daughters and drove them from their crop which they were working on
