The Col'd School was closed on the 13th of Nov, the teacher having refund to serve on the salary paid. The New School is progressing slowly.

I have received encouraging information from the schools at Lafayette as regards its prosperity and the ability of the people to support it from Peter Wilkinson Esqr. US Rev Asst at that place. I am pleased to be able to state that the White Citizens take a great interest in the matter and help and encourage them along. I advised and recommended to the Country Supt of Macon Co. to examine the teacher and adopt the school as a Dist school immediately

The school in Gallatin cannot be called flourishing. Mr. Phillips has been absent two weeks on other business leaving the school in charge of Minerva Burford Col'd, who is not capable of managing a school of seventy two scholars. If a good teacher not disposed to be a politician, could be sent up in Mr. Phillips place, I think the Directors of this
