I have recommended arbitration each disputant select a man in whom they had confidence and leave the matter in their hands agreeing to abide by their decision. Several white men have made complaint that the employees had got the best of them, that they had given them their share of the crop and now they (Coleman) would not settle their accounts. My advice to the Cold man is be honest. Fulfil every obligation, discharge his whole duty, and in the long run he will be the gained. I try to make them feel the importance of having a character, but I am afraid I spend a great deal of powder uselessly. The country is generally very quiet and peaceable. I have opened intelligences Books. Keep a record of hands to hire. and hands wanted. Together with the character of both so far as I can learn-suppose making contracts except in special cases. My advice to them is work by the day or month and settle every month.
