At each of these places the leading col'd men were consulted and the importance of at once establishing free Common schools among them was urged with all the ability that your Agent could command. At Charlotte there is no school of any importance for the Freedmen and there being many vacant houses in that village I found that a suitable home and lot school purposes could be purchased much cheaper than one could be built. The freedmen in that vicinity came in much need of a school. And your Agent would recommend that an appropriation be made and a house secured for the use of schools at Cabin Rowe. The freedmen are doing their work toward the erection of a house. At the Round Pond we are completing a House for school and church purposes The col'd people of this Dist are making commendable effort to secure to themselves the benefits of an education. Notwithstanding the Whites are manifesting so little interest in school matters.

We have not yet found the murderers of Richard Johnson, col'd, the whole affair seems to be wrapped up in so much secrecy that it has thus far baffled all investigation.
