Merriam Gardiner Esq.
Agt Bu at Rocky Mount

Sir,
Lallie Onfield complains that Redden Suggs Esq has her two boys William Guston and John Rogers aged 10 and 7. That he sent word to her by Dan Mayben he designed to have these boys bound to him in March unless she came for them. This woman has been unable to go to claim her children. She is now here and designed to go to her children soon as she can get the means. You will please arrest any action, in this on the part of Mr Suggs—at once. If indentures have been made binding them to him you will see they are cancelled. Mr. Suggs lives on Tar River about 7 miles west from Tarboro. Please inform me of the result of your action

Barker Mary,
or all whom it may concern,
As some misrepresentation seem to have been made in reference to your husband and the treatment of the children you will take no further steps in their removal until you make an explanation at this Office of the statement you formerly made. Daniel Barker will hold possession of the children until this is done and further orders issued from this Office.
Yours &c
