Alvin Carpenter says he bought a cow of Mrs Whittley for which you were security. He also says that you will not let him take the cow away. He paid $15.00 and Mrs Whittley was willing to wait for the remainder. You have no right to keep the cow without a legal process  It seems that this matter might be arranged and the man have the use of his cow & unless this can be done, you will please call at this office and explain this matter and save further trouble.

Is there a colored man in or about Goldsboro by the name of Robert Gill. He is a discharged soldier  I have the papers for his bounty and it is necessary to get his signature before I can get the check for the money. Please inform him if there - and have him sign the enclosed papers in duplicate and forward to me as soon as practicable.

Alfred Taylor complains that he dropped at or near the Market yesterday $3 50/100 in gold wrapped in a piece of Brown paper. He has proof positive, that you picked it up. Becky Page saw you take it up. Unless you give up to Alfred this money I shall be obliged to put the matter in the Provost Court.
