State of North Ca { Freedman Labor Contract. 
Anson County

This indenture made and entered into on the 17th day of Dec A.D. 1868 between W A Barrien & Ritch of the property County of Cabarrus and the State of N Ca of the first part and Henry Watkins a freedman of the second part. W Nessett that he the said Henry Watkins, and children George, Francis, & Sauel freedmen have agred [[agreed]] to work for the said Barrien & Ritch from this date to the 1st day of Jan AS 1868 on his farm in the State of Tenn, and to do all kinds of labor common to the Country and all other kinds of labor that it is deemed necessary to be done. to do this work faithfully and to be respectful in his behavior and they shall receve [[receive]] Two Hundred and Seventy Five Dolls [[dollars]] on the 1st day of Jan A.D 1868, or a part payment as soon as the crops are gather and sold. He the said Henry Watkins & children further agree that time lost by illness or absence without leave or sickness shall not be paid for. And the said W. Barrien & Ritch have agreed to furnish the said Henry Watkins and children with comfortable orders sufficient Rations the amt of money above stated and transportation to his farm free of charge. And they the said Henry Watkins and children freed laborers are to furnish their own clothing and pay their Doctor Bill.
