State of N. Carolina Freedman Labor Contract 
Hudson County

This indenture made and entered into on the 18th day of Dec A.D. 1866 between Barrier and Ritch of the County of Calawas and State of NC of the first part and Jonas Dunlap a freedman of the second part Witnesseth that he the said Jonas Dunlap & wife Ellen, and children Horace & Shelton freed laborers have agreed to work for the said Barrier & Ritch from this date to the 18th day of Jan A.D. 1868 on his farm in the State of Tenn and to do all kinds of labor common to the country and all other kinds of work that it is deemed necessary to be done to do this work faithfully and to be respectful in his behavior and that they shall receive  One Hundred and Seventy Five Dollars on the 1st day of Jan A D 1868 or a part payment [[strikethrough]] as the [[/strikethrough]] as soon as the crops are gathered and sold. He the said Jonas Dunlap wife Ellen and children agrees that time lost by idleness absence without leave or sickness shall not be paid for. And the said Barrier & Ritch have agreed to furnish the said Jonas Dunlap wife Ellen and children with Comfortable quarters sufficient Rations and the amount of money above stated and transportation to his farm  free of charge. And he the said Jonas Dunlap wife Ellen and children shall furnish their own clothing and pay their own Doctor Bill.
