Know all men by these presents that I Thos Cotton of the County of Dyer & State of Tennessee am held & firmly bound unto the United States of America in the Sum of one thousand Dollars for the payment of which held & truly to be made I bind myself, my heirs, my executors & administrators by these presents in the contract I am to furnish Jim Lucy Charley Daniel John Tennessee & Dodephene Gulkes with Quarter fuel substantial & healthy rations & all necessary medicines & medical attention in case of sickness I am also to furnish my farm & all the necessary stock farming utencils &c & give to the said Jim & family one third of the oats one fourth wheat one third of the cotton & one third of the wooll after weeving Said Thos Cotton share & also one third of the corn after fattening said Thos Cottons hogs on said plantation
And the Jim Lucy & family are to work & labor well and faithfully on my said plantation for & during the year 1866. The whole management & controll of the said plantation to be and remains under my supervision & control
The said Jim Lucy & family are to conduct themselves in obedience & respictful manner to perform such work as I may direct & at all times to regard & promote my interest & the above named laborers are to be responsible for all sums paid for medical attendance furnished them & for all loss of time & the same should be deducted from the wages & the Sad laborers for whom said medical attendance may be furnished or who shall loose or idle away their time The Said laborers furnish themselves at their own expence all clothing bedding &c The contract to commence the 1st day of January 1866 & to end with the year.
