Articles of contract and agreement for the year 1866 between John M Bowers of the first part and Jack Wood , Tersel Johnston, Robbins Elliok Bowers Sally Allen Ann Minter of the 2nd part the said J.W. Bowers agrees to furnish said parties of the 2nd part a sufficiency of land to cultivate in corn & cotton, also to furnish them with Plow Stock gear and all necessary tools to make a crop with a waggon for the use of the plantations houses and fuel for the use of said lands and give them one half of the crop also to furnish them with provisions at the customary places of the neighborhood and retain a lein on said crop until all expenses are paid said hands to work under the supervision and directions of said J.W. Bowers said parties of the 2nd part agree on their part to keep said farm in good repair do all necessary hauling & milling cutting & hauling fire wood & rails &  Hauling to & from the Rail Road and to take care and feed all the stock on said farm & find themselves and be no expense to said J.W. Bowers for clothing medicine or medical bill or any thing else, the said Bowers to see that they have Medical Aid when necessary, said hands are to be orderly and respectful to the said Bowers his family or agent the men are to control their wives & children and make them behave themselves, no swearing or indecorous language to be used in his presents or the presents his family or agent all differences that may arise amongst said hands are to be first refered to said Bowers for adjustment and if not amicably adjusted then to some justice of the peace or the County agent of the Bureau of freedmen all tools carelessly broken or lost to be paid for at their [?] any unneccessary abuse of work stock or other stock
