State of Tennessee
Hardeman County}  The following contract and agreement is this day made and entered into between James T. Pugh, of the first part, and Daniel Pugh and Julia Pugh, freed laborers of the second part. All of the county and state aforesaid: The said James T. Pugh agrees to furnish the said freed laborers with houses and lands sufficient to cultivate for and during the year 1866 and the said freed laborers agree to furnish themselves with provisions, clothing, feed, team and everything necessary to the production of a crop and after said crop shall be produced, gathered and placed in a marketable condition they agree to give to the said James T. Pugh one third thereof. And the said freed laborers agree that they will work diligently and faithfully and conduct themselves properly and obey the said James T. Pugh in all matters relating to the farm for and during the year 1866 and the said James T. Pugh agrees to protect them in the quiet enjoyment of their rights as freedmen while they remain with him. This contract is to remain in full force and virtue until the 31st day of December 1866. In testimony whereof we have hereto set our hands and seals this the 1st day of January A.D. 1866.
