Indenture for the year 1866
State of Tennessee
Hardeman County
Whereas this indenture made and entered into this 22nd day of December 1865 Between Whitson Macon of the one part and Nepton and Malinda his wife and Sela and family five children in number all of the State and County aforesaid of the other part. Said Nepton, Malinda his wife and Sela and family are to live on said Macon's premises and cultivate twenty acres in cotton and ten in corn.  Said Macon furnishing plow stock and feed for stock and farming utensils, for which Said Macon is to receive one half of the cotton and corn made on said land by Said Nepton and Malinda his wife and Sela and family. Said hands bind themselves to cultivate said land well and take good care of the crop when made, and gather it in due time.  Said Nepton and Malinda his wife and Sela and family are to furnish their own provision as far as their means will go. Said Macon will then furnish the Balance for the year 1866 at their own expense for which they are to pay Said Macon, out of their half of the crop made.  The above named hands bind themselves not to suffer idlers or unemployed persons to lye round on the premises.  This indenture or contract to commence the first day of January 1866 and close with the year.
