Know all Men by These Presents, THAT I D.J. Newbern of the County of Hardeman, State of Tennessee, and held and firmly bound to the United States of America in the sum of fifty dollars, for the payment of which I bind my heirs, executors and administrators, firmly, by these presents, in this  CONTRACT: That I am to furnish the persons, whose names are subjoined, (freed laborers,) Quarters, Fuel, substantial and healthy Rations, [[strikethrough]] all necessary Medical Attendance and Supplies in case of sickness, [[/strikethrough]] and the amount set opposite their respective names per month, during the continuation of this Contract- the laborers to be paid in full before the final disposal of the crop which is to be raised by them on my plantation, in the County of Hardeman, State of Tennessee.

We the Subjoined free laborers bind ourselves to do any & all kind of work required of us - be obedient - work well & faithful - not leave the premises without our Employers permission - take Sundays alternately cooking &c - pay all medical & all other expences to ourselves & family (Quarters, fuel & rations excluded) & pay for out of our wages all lost time that we may loose by Sickness or otherwise 
Rise by day-brake & be ready for work by Sunrise or before
