Mid't - Midnight Mod't or Mod'te - Moderate Gall't - Gallant - there are Top Gallant sails or yards NW b. W. = Northwest by West. = b. or B means "by" One of the minor fortifications at Ryde (on Isle of Wight) called "Nettlestone Fort". It was above St. Helen's and Bembridge. It was on the west side of the town of Ryde. So it fits here. - supernumerary - those extras not needed on board anymore. Bower - nautical : an anchor carried at the bow of a ship artificers: skilled workers. Veered the anchor or Bower chain - to lock the windlass to prevent more chain from running out.
