2 date. The name of the recipient may be on a tablet, or even on the edge of the medal. The proposed diameter of the medal would be about 7&1/2 centimetres, or not to exceed three (3) inches. The relief may be as bold as you please, the quantity of bullion intended providing for a generous thickness. I inclose by the Secretary's direction, a photographic copy of the obverse as designed by Mr. St. Gaudens, and of the proposed diameter; also copies of the face and obverse of three medals of like character, belonging to the Secretary, each of its proper size, and which latter photographs he has thought well to send, as possibly offering you some suggestion of the treatment which has been adopted by others in such cases; two of these being the English and American Rumford medal; have
