Mr. Jacob Lawrence
4316 37th Avenue Northeast
Seattle, Washington 98105

Dear Mr. Lawrence:

On May 1 the Smithsonian Institution and TIME Magazine plan a gala dinner to celebrate TIME's gift to the nation of an extensive collection of the original TIME cover portraits. An inaugural exhibition of one hundred of these portraits will be shown at the National Portrait Gallery to highlight those figures who over the last two decades have defined the mix and vitality of American life.

It is our hope to gather together on that spring evening a wide range of outstanding figures from the worlds of politics, entertainment, sports, journalism, social action, art, scholarship, and business. Because your portrait is among those included in the exhibition, we hope that it will be possible for you to attend the dinner (Black Tie) at 7:30 p.m. on May 1 at the National Portrait Gallery (Eighth at F Street, N.W.) in Washington preceding the preview of the TIME cover exhibition.

I shall look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely yours,
S. Dillon Ripley
