4 Sept 1988 Mr. Jacob Lawrence 4316 37th Avenue, N.E. Seattle, WA 98105 [[Image]] Aurora Designs Dear Mr. Lawrence, Hello! I don't know if you remember me, I had written you about 5 years or so ago while working in Jackson, MS. We were given the OK by you to reproduce "The Builders" on the side of a corner shop. Enclosed please find some slides of my work. I have continued working more with pastel than tempera, oil or mixed media. As you remember, I had wanted to go to NY to study, but due to certain circumstances, I have remained in Duluth with family. Two years ago I began my own company in graphic design, AURORA DESIGNS. Well, that is quite the undertaking. I am now slowing down the business to only work on special projects (far and few between) and am taking classes to receive my teaching certificate K-12. I have my degree in studio art (painting and graphics). Due to the graphic freelance slowing down (I have another part-time job to sustain myself). I have been able to work more on my work. I have been working fairly consistent, but this last 6 months, more and more. I have wanted to study with you for quite some time. As you remember we had talked about it. Nothing, of course, was set up. I believe you were going to stop teaching at the University there and wanted to go to NY. I would like to make a proposal to study with you in the future. Would next summer (2 months) be a possibility? Even 1 month would be very encouraging. I don't know how you would want to arrange for your fees, studio space etc. But, I am sure I could make the needed arragements to meet your specifications. You maywonder why do I want to study under you specifically. Well, I can give my best response. I admire your work. You speak about the spirit of the people. Gesture and rythem conbined seem to speak so clearly that no one can misunderstand. Your colors are strong - also encouraging the particualr message. You are sure. I am working with the gesture and sprit of people as well. Each of my drawings have a specific story usually dealing with observation of myself or others. I enjoy color very much. Your work has always read clear to me, thus I feel sure that your words and tutoring of myself would be enjoyable and fruitful. I am a hard worker. I desire to learn more. Please let me know your thoughts on this. If I can give you more information, please call me. Sincerely yours, [[signature - Carolyn Olson]] Carolyn Olson [[right margin - stamp]] 34 East Superior Street Suite 205 Duluth, Minnesota 55802 USA (218) 722-4192
