SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION
Washington, D.C. 20560
U.S.A.

Dear Smithsonian Friend:

It is with deep gratitude that I enclose your complimentary copy of Smithsonian Year 1994. This comprehensive annual report chronicles the work of the Institution during fiscal year 1994 (October 1, 1993 to September 30, 1994). The Smithsonian's successes -- our new initiatives, recent accomplishments and plans for the future -- reflect the dedication and generosity of a great many people. As you look through Smithsonian Year 1994, I hope you will take pride in the remarkable variety of ways the Institution has interpreted and pursued its broadly stated mission to "increase and diffuse knowledge."

Listed among the "Highlights of the Year" are exhibitions on the work of artists as diverse as Thomas Cole, Willem de Kooning, Frank Stella and John Neagle. The Emperor and Empress of Japan visited the Freer Gallery; Destiny in Space premiered at the National Air and Space Museum; the George Gustav Heye Center opened in New York City; and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute initiated an ambitious project designed to foster understanding of Panama's marine environments and the importance of their conservation. In every one of the Smithsonian's sixteen museums and galleries, in our research institutes and the National Zoo, and through our efforts on behalf of public education, the Smithsonian has continued to uphold its tradition of excellence.

Your role in this tradition is critical; in the midst of another exciting year at the Smithsonian, and as we look forward to our 150th anniversary in 1996, we are counting on the support of our patrons, members, and volunteers. Your energy and creativity, your commitment to our mission, and, of course, your generosity, will enable us to enhance the Smithsonian's public/private partnership and sustain excellence in all we do.

Smithsonian Year 1994 is a testament to what can be achieved when we work together, as citizens and partners, for "the increase and diffusion of knowledge." With best wishes and thanks to all of the Smithsonian's supporters, I am,

Sincerely,

I Michael Heyman
